🦞 Dwarf Crayfish in the Aquarium Hobby

What They’re Like

Dwarf crayfish offer all the personality of larger crayfish in a compact, aquarium-friendly size.

Varieties:
Common species in the hobby include Cambarellus patzcuarensis (CPO / Orange Dwarf Crayfish) and other Cambarellus species. Each has its own colour tone and temperament, with CPOs being the most popular for community-style setups.

Size:
They stay small, usually 3–5 cm, making them suitable for nano to medium aquariums when housed correctly.

Colouration:
Dwarf crayfish display rich, solid colours such as bright orange, sandy brown, or natural mottled patterns. Under good lighting and against darker substrates, their colours really stand out.

Behaviour:
Unlike shrimp, dwarf crayfish are territorial and curious. They spend much of their time exploring the substrate, climbing décor, and defending small areas. They are active, bold, and full of character.

Care & Setup

Tank Size & Layout

  • Tank size: I recommend 30 litres or more, especially if keeping more than one crayfish. Extra space reduces territorial disputes.

  • Aquascaping: Provide plenty of hiding spots using caves, rocks, driftwood, and plants. Each crayfish should have at least one secure shelter.

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel works best, allowing natural digging behaviour without damaging their undersides.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 18–24°C is ideal. Cooler water helps extend lifespan and reduce aggression.

  • pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline water (6.5–7.8) is ideal for most dwarf crayfish.

  • Hardness: Moderate hardness is preferred to support healthy moulting.

  • Stability: Sudden parameter changes can cause failed moults, which are often fatal.

Filtration & Oxygen

  • Filtration: Good biological filtration is essential. Sponge filters or protected intakes are recommended, especially during moulting periods.

  • Oxygenation: Crayfish appreciate well-oxygenated water but dislike strong currents.

  • Tank security: Crayfish are escape artists—tight-fitting lids are a must.

Feeding

  • Omnivorous diet: Dwarf crayfish eat algae, biofilm, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and protein-based foods.

  • Protein balance: Occasional protein (shrimp pellets, frozen foods) supports growth, but overfeeding protein can increase aggression.

  • Feeding tip: Feed small amounts once daily. Remove uneaten food to maintain water quality.

Tank Mates & Compatibility

  • Best kept: Species-only tanks or with fast, peaceful fish that stay in the upper water levels.

  • Avoid: Slow fish, long fins, or bottom dwellers—they may be harassed or caught.

  • Shrimp warning: Dwarf crayfish may hunt shrimp, especially juveniles.

Why Dwarf Crayfish Stand Out

  • Big personality in a small body: More interactive and bold than shrimp.

  • Hardier than shrimp: Better suited to aquarists who want character without extreme water sensitivity.

  • Unique behaviour: Watching them explore, dig, and moult is fascinating.

  • Great centrepiece: Ideal for aquarists who want something different from fish-only tanks.

Pro Tips I Share With Customers

  • Always provide more hiding spots than crayfish in the tank.

  • Never disturb a crayfish during moulting—they are soft and vulnerable.

  • Perform small, regular water changes (10–20%) to maintain stability.

  • Keep only one male per tank unless the aquarium is heavily structured.

In Short

Dwarf crayfish are not “shrimp replacements.” They are bold, territorial, and full of personality. When housed correctly, they become the centerpiece of the aquarium and a joy to observe.
